My journey to this point has been somewhat unexpected but oh so wonderful - most of the time. Bare with me as I give you a little snippet into my life and what makes me tick.
First, a little background. I grew up in Carlock, Illinois, which is a tiny town just outside of Bloomington/Normal. Growing up I was a total tomboy and obsessed with sports. I played softball from the tender age of eight until I graduated from college at the University of Wisconsin - Parkside where I was fortunate to have received a four-year scholarship to play the sport I loved.
With no vision as to what my life would hold I took my first big leap and moved to Chicago right after graduation; boy did I fall in love with that city! Once I found a job it did not take me long to realize that I was not meant to be working at a desk shuffling papers. While walking to the “L” one day I stumbled upon this little flower shop, the Dilly Lily, in the heart of Lincoln Park where I lived. It was so quaint and cozy that I instantly fell in love. It didn't hurt that there was a “Help Wanted” sign in the window egging me on, so I dropped my resume off and lo and behold they took me in and started molding my career.
I dove in head first and fell in love with creating beautiful arrangements and learning about different flowers. It was not long before all I wanted to do was eat, sleep and breathe wedding and special event floral designs. A little over a year ago, I was asked to become the manager of weddings and special events at the shop. I, of course, accepted and loved every minute.
After working at the Dilly Lily for 3 years it became clear to me that I was to own my own floral business and start making a name for myself as a florist. The idea of Vera & Buck was born and the rollercoaster to make it a reality began. Oh, what a reality it is now. I then moved back home to Bloomington/Normal where we opened the doors to V&B in February of 2018.
In the fall of 2017 I became a Chapel Designer where I met the most amazing people and became intertwined in a network of florists who are just out of this world talented. My mom, Lori, and I continue to feed our knowledge about the growing stages of flowers and work toward making our little farm patch in Carlock bigger and better each passing year.
Now a days when I am not here at the studio creating beautiful flower arrangements I enjoy cooking, eating - especially cheese (duh), drinking wine, watching movies, reading books, being outside yada-yada-yada. It doesn't take too much to make this girl happy!
Every day at Vera & Buck is a challenge but it is also so overwhelmingly joy-filled that I wouldn't change any of it for the world. It is my hope to expand your knowledge about the flowers you are receiving and to create a new love and appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us.
Lori & Scott McCormick
My business partner, my mom, Lori. Seriously the most influential woman in my life. With over 35 years of work in the Criminal Justice field this road is new and exciting for her as well.
My dad Scott, has a day job of being a mobile learning consultant. His side job with Vera & Buck is as the lead question answerer/thought provoker. How did he get so lucky?
None of this dream would have been possible without their ever-loving, sometimes tough-loving, feedback. With 35 years of marriage under their belt they know a few things on how to make a good thing work. They are two people I look up to immensely and having their confidence makes this adventure even more sweet.
